PELVIC FLOOR
WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?
Your Pelvic Floor is a group of muscles, connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels that make up the floor of your pelvis. Often when people refer to the pelvic floor they are referring to the muscle aspect which comprise of two layers. The superficial layer of muscles surround the entry to your urethra, vagina and anus. The deeper layer runs between your legs from the pubic bone to the tailbone.

Aids in sexual performance
Supports pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, bowel)
Tightens to allow you to hold on for the toilet (prevents accidents)
Relaxes to allow you to pass urine and open your bowels on the toilet

Causes of pelvic floor weakness can include:
Pregnancy
Vaginal Delivery
Epidural
Forceps
Long active labour (>2hrs)
Baby 4kg
Repetitive heavy lifting
Chronic cough
High impact exercise
